Yuletide Fandoms!

September 9th, 2012 (12:11 am)

So, the Yuletide fandom brainstorming post is live. This is largely copy pasted from my comment there.

Fandom I will definitely be nominating: The Mysterious Cities of Gold. Because I always do. Apparently the new canon has been put off until January of 2013, but given that I've been waiting thirty years since Season One a few more months won't make much different. (Longest. Hiatus. Ever.)

Other fandoms I'm considering:

The Those Who Hunt the Night series by Barbara Hambly: Has had new books released the past two years, and I would love to read more about the World's Most Sensible Vampire Love Triangle. Of course, I could also nominate the Benjamin January mysteries, or the Windrose series, or ...

The Question: Awesome eighties comic series by Denny O'Neill about the guy that Watchmen's Rorschach was based on.

Doctor Strange: The animated movie! The comics would be nice too, but I haven't read very many.

999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors: I spent far too many hours getting to the good ending in this game, and I love everyone except the boring generic protagonist. (Sorry, Junpei.)

Gray Matter: I <3 this game so much. In the absence of the further official adventures of David and Sam, fanfiction would be great.

The Secret World: Speaking of video games I have spent far too many hours on ... my problem here would be narrowing down the character nominations. Do I want adorable academic slash about Arun Singh and Monty de la Roche? Or do I want to hear more about Eleanor Franklin and her house full of cats and ghosts? Or do I want to write a terrible Mary Sue romance about my Templar and Richard Sonnac? Wait, forget I asked that last question.

G.I. Joe: Renegades: I ship Scarlet/Snake-Eyes like burning and I'd love to know what happens after the end of the series.

Dirk Gently: Alas, BBC4 is not going to be making any more of the TV adapation :(. It is a lovely Yuletide-sized canon, though!

Monster by Big Bang. There is so much going on here. Who doesn't want to hear about the further adventures of a mutant superhero K-Pop boyband?

... so that's nine fandoms for two nomination slots. *facepalm*

Luckily, other people seem to be planning to nominate Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries and Dollhouse, so that's two less for me to worry about.

Drabble Prompts?

September 7th, 2012 (06:32 pm)

I have actually been writing quite a lot lately, but I can't seem to focus long enough to actually finish anything, which is frustrating. Possibly it's been so long that my brain has forgotten how to finish stories. So: drabble prompts?

Suggested fandoms.Collapse )

And, as you all know, I love crossovers.

"It's like kissing, only there's a winner."

Not only did Neil Gaiman win the Hugo for The Doctor's Wife, he's writing another episode.

*runs around room making high pitched squeaking noises*

I really, really hope this is for Season Eight so we get it next year for the anniversary.

Doctor Who: Asylum Of the Daleks

September 3rd, 2012 (02:34 pm)

A day late since yesterday was Father's Day here in the Antipodes, so I spent it having yum cha with the parental units and then we watched watching The Hunger Games. I did manage to see the episode yesterday morning before my parents got up, though, thanks to our local public broadcaster putting it on their free internet service immediately after it was broadcast in Britain. As a result it got 80,000 views in its first twenty-four hours and I had no reason to, um ... acquire ... it. Good on you, ABC, for striking a blow for common sense.

Short version: I liked the episode! Contains: spoilers.Collapse )

Dating Meme

August 29th, 2012 (10:59 pm)

Stolen from [personal profile] deborah_judge and [personal profile] selenak:

Name a fictional character and I'll tell you three reasons I wouldn't want to date them.

In some cases, I could probably come up with three hundred reasons *g*.

Good News, Everyone!

August 27th, 2012 (03:07 pm)

... and by 'everyone' I mean 'the people who voted for Ophelia in my poll.

It turned out that I could fix the problems with the file without having to start over from scratch, so now it's up on the AO3 as well with a corrected aspect ratio and looking much shinier. (It's an XVid file instead of a DivX file, because for some reason DivX has decided that it hates correct aspect ratio. It did the same thing with Elevation. Weird.)

In addition, I have now put up new download files for all the vids I've posted there. With the single exception of Extraordinary Machine, these are ALL NEW FILES. They have correct aspect ratio and there are now larger versions for anyone who wants to see my vids with maximized shininess. (Completely worth it as long as you're on a reasonably fast connection.) If you have any other versions of any of these hanging around on your hard drive, I suggest replacing them forthwith:

American Tune

Holy Grail

Mackerel Skies

Extraordinary Machine is also available for streaming and download, but I've discovered that the lossless Lagarith file was corrupted when my hard drive died at the start of the year :(. This means that I can't make any new versions of the file and will need to remaster that too ... eventually. Some time after the ten other vids.

People who voted for Ophelia should feel free to change their votes, but barring that it looks like Be My Hero is first up.

Kudos For Kudos

August 25th, 2012 (08:52 pm)

Hanging around the internet as I do, I've seen grumbling in various places about the AO3's Kudos button. This is mainly because some people feel that it discourages readers from leaving actual comments. I just felt moved to say that that this is not true for my work - I get more kudos than I ever got comments on things, and the kudos keeps turning up. It's always been rare for me to get comments or e-mail about a story or vid I posted years ago, but kudos never seems to stop coming. Both from people I know have been reading my work for a long time (you know who you are - and thanks!) and from people who, as far as I can tell, have never communicated with me before in any way. (Also from people who either don't have accounts or don't post logged in, so I cannot tell who they might be. Thank you, mysterious internet strangers.) People who have something to say other than 'I liked this!' still seem to comment, as well.

This came to mind today because, as some of you already know, I've been having kind of a rough time lately. It's just really nice that every afternoon I get an e-mail amounting to 'hey, people like that thing you made!' Even though I've barely posted fic in ages, it reminds me that there are still readers out there.

Reading on the AO3 has also got me sending way more feedback than I have in years. I used to be pretty good back in the mailing list days (when dinosaurs roamed the earth ...) but became terrible after everything moved to livejournal. Now I can bookmark things and go back later, and if I can't think of anything to say I can just hit the kudos button to express my general positive feelings.

So, y'know, I am grateful for the attention and encourage you to continue pressing the button if you feel moved to do so *g*.

Day of Vidding

August 23rd, 2012 (10:20 pm)

Today has been a vid-filled day. Not only did my Vividcon DVDs arrive in the post (squee!) but I've gone through my vids and finished uploading everything that's fit to be seen to my AO3 account.

Unfortunately, 'everything that's fit to be seen' amounts to a mere five vids out of sixteen - everything else is in serious need of remastering to fix source quality, aspect ratio issues, etc. While I have time, I should probably get on that. Only I have no idea what I should start with.

The other five (the two Torchwood vids, Ev'rything I've Got, Bicycle Race and All I Want for Christmas) aren't options right now because I don't have complete DVD source for them. And also because it's August and I'm not listening to All I Want for Christmas five hundred times in a row this early in the year.

Well, actually, one specific thing is lost: my X-Men DVDs! (With the exception of First Class.) I have looked everywhere, and they are not in my house. Clearly I must have leant them to someone, but I cannot remember who. (Is it you? If it is, please let me know. Even Wolverine is gone, although I don't care about that so much.)

Normally this would be a minor irritation, but I'm in a state of Extended and Advanced Brain-Fail which requires the regular application of Patrick Stewart, and I have almost run through all the Next Gen episodes on my DVR.

I mean, James McAvoy is adorable and First Class is actually my favourite X-Men film, but it is not the same. I am not sure fast-forwarding to the relevant bits of I, Claudius would really work, either.

I will just have to go back to re-watching due South until I solve this mystery.

TL,DR: brain melting, please send Patrick Stewart.
